Data Sources and Quality

Data Sources and Quality

The Chomp database aggregates food and nutrition data from multiple public and licensed sources to provide broad product and ingredient coverage.

Primary Data Sources

  • Public food databases, including the USDA FoodData Central database
  • Open food and nutrition datasets
  • Publicly available product and nutrition information published by food brands and retailers
  • Internal normalization, categorization, and quality-control processes performed by the Chomp team

Data Processing and Normalization

Data collected from external sources is standardized through an internal normalization pipeline before being indexed and made available through the API. This process may include:

  • Format normalization
  • Duplicate reduction
  • Ingredient and nutrient mapping
  • Barcode reconciliation
  • Category standardization
  • Basic quality and consistency checks

Because food product data changes frequently and originates from third-party sources, Chomp cannot guarantee that all records are complete, current, or error-free at all times.

If your application has specific compliance, sourcing, or provenance requirements, please contact the Sales Team before deployment.
